Film to bow May 24 in New York, Los Angeles
Focus World has set a May 24 launch for Alex Gibney’s documentary “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks” in New York and Los Angeles followed by addtional markets in June.
“Secrets” details the creation of Julian Assange’s website, which facilitated the largest security breach in U.S. history, along with Assange’s rise and fall in paralleled with Pfc. Bradley Manning, the soldier who downloaded hundreds of thousands of documents from classified U.S. military and diplomatic servers.
Pic is produced by Gibney, Alexis Bloom and Marc Shmuger with Alex Gibney directing from his own script.
“Secrets” screened last month at Sundance. Peter Debruge’s review for Variety said, “Since 2006, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been running around pulling down the pants of corporations and governments alike. Now Alex Gibney returns the favor with a feisty portrait of the populist hero in ‘We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks,’ exposing what Gibney sees as the paradox at the center of Assange’s methods, wherein the man responsible for uncovering high-level corruption refuses to discuss perceived corruption in his own life.”
