“The Mountains Between Us” helmer Gerardo Naranjo has come in to save the day for MGM’s “Death Wish” as the director is in negotiations to replace former helmer Joe Carnahan.
Carnahan had been long attached but was unable to find his lead and left the project in February.
The pic is a remake of the 1974 pic starring Charles Bronson about a man who becomes a vigilante after his wife is killed and daughter is raped by hoodlums.
That pic is based on the Brian Garfield tome and John D. Brancato, Carnahan and Michael Ferris penned this adaptation. Kevin King and Sylvester Stallone will produce.
The project is a huge step for Naranjo who will now look to land his lead. Carnahan and MGM had approached actors such as Brad Pitt, Will Smith and Bruce Willis prior to Carnahan’s departure and hope to land similar star to carry the film.
Besides “The Mountains Between Us,” the CAA-repped Naranjo made his name for his critical hit “Miss Bala.”
Gerardo Naranjo to Grant MGM’s ‘Death Wish’
Yet another remake of a classic movie,,and another example of wasted time! Paramount first
released the original “DEATH WISH” in 1974 under Micheal Winner’s expert direction-and it
put Charles Bronson on the map! but The Cannon Group made a Franchise of “DEATH WISH”
in the 1980s,,so why on earth would Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Paramount waste their time and
resources trying to remake this movie? i think remakes should be outlawed, because if the business
has gotten to this point, where it no longer has original ideas, then why rip-off the classics?,its pathetic! and nobody today will ever come-up to Charles Bronson’s standards,,nobody!
I am very much looking forward to this film…the time is right for such a message. Although it would be difficult to attract him to this project, Russell Crowe would be a natural fit for the main role.
Just what we need. Yet another “Death Wish” How about something original.
