'Sports Without Borders' to be set during Winter Olympics

French thesp Gerard Depardieu will topline in Russian comedy “Sports Without Borders,” which is set during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

Depardieu, who became a Russian citizen earlier this year, will play the head of Russia’s men’s alpine ski team, who fires his coaching staff and hires an eccentric Austrian replacement, according to RIA Novosti news agency.

Austrian director Otto Retzer and Russian Alexander Lomakin will co-direct the pic, which is budgeted at Euros 3 million ($4 million). Russian shingle Stella is producing.

  1. Jackie Chan to China with love…Gerard Depardieu to Russia. Earlier in his career, it was Sean Connery to Spain; and, back in the day, many (MANY) American actors to Italy. For the most part, this is financially motivated (some of it for employment) but perfectly understandable, if not always commendable. However, since “loyalty” and “allegiance” are quickly becoming commodities fewer and fewer can ill-afford, whatever works — and wherever the work — rules today.
