Gaumont takes Coixet’s ‘Yesterday’

Spain crisis drama plays at Berlinale in Panorama

PARIS — Gallic major Gaumont has acquired worldwide rights outside Spain to Isabel Coixet’s “Yesterday Never Ends.” Deal, which extends an existing relationship with producer A Contracorriente, includes distribution rights to France.

The film, which has just been selected to screen as a Berlin festival Panorama Special, stars Javier Camara (“Talk to Her”) and Candela Pena (“A Gun in Each Hand”).

The exact plot is under wraps. Coixet commented, however, that the film “is a kind of return to ‘My Life Without Me,’ ” her 2003 Sarah Polley starring international breakthrough, and a take on “the situation Spain is experiencing right now as a country.”

Coixet’s label, Miss Wasabi Films, produces with Adolfo Blanco’s production-distribution house A Contracorriente, which releases “Yesterday” in Spanish theaters April 26.

Gaumont has never taken any Spanish film. Given the current situation in Spain, we believe it is not only an overwhelming story but also an important and very contemporary film,” said Gaumont deputy sales head Yohann Comte.

A Contracorriente distributed Gaumont’s “The Intouchables” in Spain, nursing it to a $21 million box office.

It also bowed Gaumont’s “The Chef” and is co-producing the Gaumont-sold Euros 17 million ($ 22.7 million) “Turning Tide,” the feature film debut of d.p. Christophe Offenstein (“Blood Ties”), starring Guillaume Canet (“Last Night”) and Francois Cluzet (“Tell No One”).

The relationship won’t have persuaded Gaumont to pick up “Yesterday,” but it may have helped the French major beat out competition to tie it down.
