Friday Box Office: ‘Mama’ crawls to No. 1 with $10 mil; ‘Zero Dark’ stays strong for second spot with $4.6 mil

'Silver Linings' expands release, earns $3 mil; 'Last Stand' stumbles with $2 mil

Universal had audiences crying for “Mama” at the domestic B.O. Friday as the Guillermo del Toro-produced pic scared up $10.1 million for the day.

With students out of school on a long Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, “Mama” — the frame’s only PG-13 new wide release — is already vastly exceeding expectations. The scarer is now expected to earn $25.5 million through Sunday, with a four-day likely in the low $30 million range. Pre-weekend projections had the pic topping out at $20 million in four days.

“Mama” reportedly cost only $15 million to produce, putting it in good shape this frame as horror films tend not to perform after their debut weekend.

U’s scarer bumped last weekend’s champ “Zero Dark Thirty” to second with $4.6 million starting its soph sesh in wide release. The Sony thriller has cumed $42.9 million thus far and will likely earn around $18 million in four days this frame.

Also best picture-nommed “Silver Linings Playbook” expanded by 1,713 screens this week, much as “Zero Dark Thirty” did last, to take third Friday with $3 million. The Weinstein Co. dramedy will likely maintain that spot through Monday despite a four-day haul just in the low teens.

Finally, the remainder of the weekend B.O. can expect low returns this frame as three pics vie fiercely for the same audience. Of them, Mark Wahlberg-starrer “Broken City” from Fox is in best shape with $3 million from Friday.

Next, in fifth Friday, Warner Bros.’ “Gangster Squad” isn’t having the comeback weekend the studio had hoped for. The ensemble mobster movie earned $2.7 million Friday for a $25.8 million cume. One report has it leapfrogging “Broken City” for fourth by Sunday’s end.

Finally, Arnold Schwarzenegger-Johnny Knoxville thriller “The Last Stand,” offering slightly lighter fare to the same demo, earned $2 million Friday. The Lionsgate actioner is expecting about $5.8 million in three days and $6.7 million in four, rounding out the long weekend around tenth place behind “Les Miserables,” “Django Unchained” and “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”
