Finnish B.O. has best year since 1983

Box office for year totals $108 million

MOSCOW

Finnish exhibitors had a record breaking year at the box office in 2012 taking around €82 million ($108 million) on 8.5 million admissions, the best figures since 1983.

Hollywood movies dominated the top 10 with just three local films in the list, the highest at No. 3.

Biggest grossing film was “Skyfall,” distributed by FS Films/SF, which took in $7.3 million from 616,000 admissions after its Oct. 26 release.

Other chart toppers were “Ice Age: Continental Drift” ($3.8 million), local pic “Ricky Rapper and Cool Wendy” ($3.7 million), “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” ($3.6 million) and “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” ($3.6 million).

Local film “Road North” was at No. 7 with $3.1 million and “Purge,” Finland’s entry for best foreign Oscar, was at No. 8 with $2.5 million.

Finnish films grossed around $29 million on 2.4 million admission — up 300,000 on the 2010 record — for a 28% market share.

Tero Koistinen, head of the Finnish Chamber of Films, which has represented trade and producer orgs since 1923, told Variety: “Finnish cinemas had the best result since the breakthrough of the home video. It reflects the huge success of Hollywood movies as well as local titles.”
