FilmDistrict has nabbed U.S. distribution rights to the musical event film “Rocketman,” which chronicles the journey of musician Elton John from childhood to stardom.

FilmDistrict is planning a wide theatrical release for the film, which is in early pre-production. The FilmDistrict deal comes on the heels of U.K.-based Icon’s production arm AI Film coming aboard to co-finance the film during the Cannes Film Festival.

Pic will be directed by Michael Gracey (“The Greatest Showman on Earth”) from a script written by Lee Hall (“War Horse,” “Billy Elliot”). Rocket Pictures and Icon’s AI Film are co-financing the project. Steve Hamilton Shaw and David Furnish are producing the project along with Lawrence Bender for AI Film.
