Pic's producers seek to make international comedies out of Spain
MADRIDFilm Factory Entertainment has boarded the previously announced Spanish romantic comedy “Tres bodas de mas” (Three Many Weddings), partnering with “The Impossible” producer Apaches Entertainment, comedy specialists Think Studio and Ciskul plus Antena 3 Films (Variety, Sept 21). Film Factory has worldwide sales rights and will present first footage at Berlin. Warner Bros. will distrib the pic in Spain on Dec. 6, kicking off one of the country’s most popular holiday weekend. Helmed by Javier Ruiz Caldera, whose latest comedy, “Ghost Graduation,” was a Fox pickup for North and Latin America, “Weddings” turns on a woman (Inma Cuesta) who questions her love-life when invited to three former boyfriends’ weddings in just one month. In Spain, comedies were once predominantly local fare, filled with local references that would be incomprehensible to international auds . No more. ” ‘Three More Weddings’ combines a Farrelly brothers’ humor with a ‘Bridget Jones’-style central character,” said Maria Angulo, who produced for Apaches. “The comedy could take place anywhere.” Antena Films’ parent Antena 3 will market “Weddings” across its Spanish TV channels, a strategy that has goosed B.O. perfs for local movies including “The Impossible.” Emiliano de Pablos contributed to this article.
