‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Fans Demand New Leads

Fans of “Fifty Shades of Grey” have been tied up in who will play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the upcoming movie adaptation, and many were none too happy about the casting announcement made on Labor Day.

Author of the best-selling erotic series E.L. James announced on her Twitter Monday that “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam and “Ben and Kate’s” Dakota Johnson will play the protagonists in the movie. However, many loyalists had set sights on “White Collar’s” Matt Bomer to play the troubled billionaire and Alexis Bledel of “Gilmore Girls” fame to play Steele, and started a Change.org petition in protest of the decision, which has received more than 7,000 signatures in less than 24 hours.

“All readers believe matt is christian (sic),” reads the petition’s page. “It would be a dream to see him in the movie.”

Bomer had always been a fan favorite to play Grey, along with “Man of Steel” star Henry Cavil and “Vampire Diaries” actor Ian Somerholder.

“Matt Bomer is perfect to play this role… He’s the only Christian Grey,” one commenter wrote. “He is a great actor and he can fit the character perfectly… No Bomer No Movie.”

Several have jumped to defend the “Fifty Shades” cast, including the film’s co-producer Dana Brunetti.

“There is a lot that goes into casting that isn’t just looks,” he tweeted Monday. “Talent, availability, their desire to do it, chemistry with other actor, etc.”

This isn’t the only Change.org petition as of late to cry foul on an anticipated casting announcement. Batman fans recently started a petition against Warner Bros., calling for them to recast Batman in the upcoming “Batman vs. Superman” movie after the announcement was made that Ben Affleck would play the caped crusader. That petition has garnered more than 90,000 signatures.

The “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie is set to bow in 2014.

I understand some ire about them not fitting into the physical description of the characters in the book or what our own vision interprets, but a petition? Come on, really? I mean Matt Bomer and Emmy Rossum are what I envisioned, but I’m not gonna get all upset that they weren’t cast. Obviously the producer and E.L. are more capable of choosing the right Christian and Anna than a bunch of ravenous fans. Obviously Charlie and Dakota nailed the chemistry and did a great job at the table reads, so I have confidence in them.

    • M.M. says:

of course the Producers will say Charlie and Dakota nailed the chemistry. do you think they will say they didn’t? how many movie flops because of bad casting and lack of schitzpah and they were supposed to be box office hits. Fifty Shades IS about their physical attraction that is why the book was so successful. Dakota is ok but she’s not exotic as Emilia Clarke for instance. Charlie if he is less stocky and shave that biker beard is ok but the likes of Henry Cavill for instance is spot on Christian.

  2. Alice says:

As a fan from the original fanfics, and even buying the novels, I am truly disappointed by the leads choices.
If the characters I like will be portrayed by these newbies, I’d rather not see the movie at all.
Sorry Icy, but you really disappointed us all, your true real fans, who waited for updates excitedly over twitter.
Our dream is Fifty and Ana is Rob and Kristen, they will always be the true characters in our minds, but even Matt Bomer will be great as Fifty.
I really hated your choices for the leads, EL James. The actor is brawny but stupid looking, not suitable for the beautiful but devilishly sinful Fifty. The actress is meh.
A change might save this movie, cause God knows so many fans have lost interest.
If not, prepare to waste away your money, Universal. Casting is important, really important, see how Beautiful Creatures flop?? Bad casting.

    • Darth vader says:

When I was reading the book I pictured Danny Trejo and Sandra Bernhard. Just saying. It would be epic. So romantic and suck beautiful children they would make

  3. I agree that E.L. Jame’s choices leave a lot to be desired but I don’t think Matt Bomer and Alexis Bleidel are the right choices either. Now Henry Cavill definitely is Christian Grey…he has the looks, the charm and demeanor. There are a lot of other actresses who will also do a better job and fit the bill better than Dakota Johnson. Lucy Hale is one of them. It was such a disappointment.

  4. pickleduck says:

If anyone has an issue with Matt Bomer playing Christian Grey, they have never seen White Collar. In the show he is very suave and slick. He is very convincing as a straight man. I admire him along with Neil Patrick Harris. Both very talented and convincing actors. Amazing actors, and Im straight.

  5. Jo says:

Fans clearly over-estimate the credibility in playing this role. It might be a majorly successful book, but it is hardly regarded literature, and it’s been widely documented that playing a heavily sexual character can be a career killer

  6. Casting is the first indication how seriously a film studio will regard the movie version of the book.

  7. sh says:

Seriously, calm down! I would say two relative ‘newcomers’ would be better than two well known actors to play the part. Otherwise it becomes ‘oh look, there’s Matt Bomer doing the nasty!!!’ Give them a chance, they obviously showed potential in the casting sessions! Geez!

  8. Michelle says:

Go look at his pictures on IMDb…

  9. Michelle says:

And starting a petition for new leads is insulting to the actors that got the roles!

  10. Michelle says:

I wish this was the worst problem in the world. Doctor Who just recently cast someone who wasn’t my first choice, but I’m going to watch anyway, because I’m a fan of the show. Get over it. You don’t know how good they’ll both be, so stop whining. There are other problems in the world besides not getting your first choice for actors/actresses for a movie!!

  11. Ashley says:

I’m sorry but I just can’t picture a gay Matt Bomer playing this rough Christian Grey…. I a, fully supportive of gay people but I cannot see a gay man truly play a Straight Dom…..

  12. Jo says:

The only thing that upsets me about the casting of this film is that now I’m tempted to see it.

Anyone who thinks Charlie Hunnam can’t do obsessed and sexually domineering go watch Abandon.

  13. CDR says:

Sorry- Charlie Hunnam is handsome but not Christian. The description of him in the book is that he is so unbelievably handsome that every woman can’t keep their eyes off him, and he just doesn’t cut it. Ian Somerholder, Henry Cavill, and Matt Bomer are perfect. Just don’t know what casting was thinking. Obviously they haven’t read the books. So disappointed in the choice for Christian. I think Dakota Johnson is perfect- she’s has that simple beauty, and once they color her hair brown, she will most definitely fit the role.

    • Darth vader says:

You people are retarded. It’s a book. How could you possibly know exactly what a character looks like if it isn’t a picture book. And dwindle it down to yeah in my kind he looked exactly like that actor. Get real. They are professionals for a reason and they are both going to blue it out if the water and change everyone’s expectations. All you idiots think you know who it should or shouldn’t be but get the f*** over. The movies Getting made and all you haters will be in the theaters watching as soon as you check out the trailer. Seriously have some faith!!!!

    • Darth vader says:

Why Henry cavil? I would own superman if he would have lived long long ago in a galaxy far far away…

  14. J.T. says:

Oh please, get over it. Obviously director, producer and author know what they are doing. Charlie Hannum will totally knock this ball outta the park playing the domineering Christian Grey. Have faith fans!!

  15. Oscar Wildebeest says:

Meanwhile, children are starving in Ethiopia.

  16. M.M. says:

Dakota was the star of Kate and Ben, Fox TV show. It got cancelled shortly after it began. nuff said.
Emilia Clarke would’ve been perfect but who’s to say if she was ever interested.
I still say it was a rushed job and the studio just took anyone who was available.

  17. Movies from books are never as “good” as the book. I think Charlie and Dakota will make a movie, not a direct application of the book. NO one can deny Charlie’s complete sexiness…I am not familiar with Dakota, but maybe Charlie can bring out her inner Anastasia!

  18. M.M. says:

Sometimes certain books shouldn’t be made into a movie. Fifty Shades of Grey is one of them! Especially how wrong the studio picked its leads. It looks like a rushed job. They announced the date before they got their stars. Time was ticking and they needed to get going. The makings of another bomb at the box office.

  19. Frank W says:

Darth, after falling into the volcano, do you really feel you have the right to call anyone else “Ugly?”

  20. Cate says:

I might piss off some people with this comment, but that’s what the internet is for, right? Disclaimer: I’m coming at this as a non-fan of the books. My history with FSoG: So I did read the books. Found them poorly written but funny, like Twilight (which I also read and must have been the only high school girl not to like them, except the first. The first was okay, there was still potential). I know FSoG is Twilight fan fiction. I read it online when it was JUST fan fiction as well then took a second stab at it when it was (amazingly) published. And that was it. I haven’t even paid much attention to the casting up until now except that Bomer and Bladel were faves. The casting choices announced are the only things that have piqued my interested in giving this story a second chance, and by second chance i mean taking it seriously and going into a movie theater when it does premier with no judgement. And that’s because these two actors are actually of amazing caliber. I’m sure many have said this but we were not there in the room when they auditioned. They could possibly have crazy chemistry or have brought a new side to the characters that works on screen (even if it doesn’t in your fantasies). So i’ll check this out for Charlie and Dakota. Beauty is subjective. If you don’t like it don’t see it but don’t insult these actors who have taken it upon themselves to breath a little life into the source material (and hopefully it doesn’t resemble the source material too much). My 2 cents have been deposited into this conversation.

  21. Eileen says:

I agree don’t like who they picked for movie they ruined it

  22. Willis Welch says:

… Isn’t Matt Bomer gay? I’m pretty sure that he is openly gay which kinda doesn’t work with the whole “sexual chemistry” thing. I suppose he is a good actor so he might be able to pull it off but I think it makes sense to have a straight actor play the lead in a film that is basically pornography.

    • Bob C. says:

Wow, Willis, how did you manage to type that in your white hood and robe?? Sexist, bigoted and dumb all in one.

      • Frank W says:

I was shocked at how you came down hard on Willis who at least did have a thoughtful reply and was going to suggest looking up some of the more homophobic comments of one retired Star Wars character, Darth (lower case) vader, but I see he already made a reply to you.

  23. Elle says:

What is it about the Internet that turns people into mean teenage girls?

  24. missy says:

Charlie Hunnam is the best actor to play Christian Grey. He is the full package.

  25. Amanda says:

Christian is supposed to be a very sexy man with a very detailed look….all of which Charlie DOES NOT POSSESS!!!! IN NO WAY DOES CHARLIE RESEMBLE HOW CHRISTIAN IS DESCRIBED! He is NOT even attractive! Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel fit the characters descriptions 100%!!!!! What kind of director chooses someone WHO REPRESENTS THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE OF THE CHARACTER THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYING????? It’s like they’ve sacrificed the character for a random nobody that just happened to be available…..IDIOTS!!!

  26. Diane Gale says:

50 shades IS about Christians looks and the actor chosen doesn’t have the look!!

  27. Diane Gale says:

Matt Boomer is christian Grey not the guy chosen. You should listen to the women who read the book. I’m not going to see the movie. As far as I’m concerned its ruined>

  28. D'Trayvon says:

Matt Bomer is Fifty Shaydes 2 white! What da world needs is Curtis Jackson! WE NEED FITTY CENT! And dat Dakota gurl ain’t no FANNING! She’s Don Juan Johnson.. kid! Mr. Crockett’s chilln!

  29. keri says:

ummm may be these morons should consider the possibility that neither matt bomer & alexis bledel are interested in the shit role.

  30. Renee says:

I am thrilled that Charlie was chosen to play Christian Grey! I felt hollywood would chose a pretty boy but that would make the scenes a little silly if you think about it. Not that he’s not gorgeous, which he is – he would be better at BSDM than Ian. He’s hot, talented and has the physique. DID I SAY TALENTED! Sons of Anarchy is going into its sixth season. Stop with the hateful comments.

  31. M.M. says:

Charlie is ok but if he remains buff it’s going to spoil it and the fans will have the final say not the studio. As for Dakota, she is so wrong for Anastasia Steele on so many levels. Either there weren’t any good actresses available or turned it down, it’s pretty much a washed of a movie. And yes, it is the fans that will have the say so, not these egomaniac Producers who borrowed from the banks to make this film, by the way. I’m beginning to think this book shouldn’t have been made into a movie. It’s just too complicated on so many levels.

  32. Bob C. says:

How stupid and vacuous these chronic complainers are! They’re behaving like spoiled brats who didn’t get their way. The list of “wrong casting” is incredibly long and includes predicted “failures” like Michael Keaton as Batman, Heath Ledger as The Joker, Tom Cruise as LeStat, Daniel Criag as Bond, and on and on. If the author of “50 Shades” herself likes the casting, then shut your pie holes and give the actors a chance.

If it makes you feel any better, imagine this: Casting could have been Woody Allen as Christian and Rosie O’Donnell as Ana. Feel better now?

    • Frank W says:

Darth, I’m beginning to think you’re a guy I know named Derron. IF there are two of you who talk like that, OMG the grammar world will be in ruins!

  33. Laia says:

These books are a big fanfiction they are not even books, they are crap. The only thing is they are going to ruin a good actor’s career, Charlie Hunnam is awsome, he has too much to loose. Dakota Johnson is famous since her birth if this movie is a total fail nothing happens because she is the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, she doesn’t loose anything.

  34. Laughing at fools says:

Did those fans ever stop to think Matt may have been one of those actors not interested in doing the film. Most actors are distancing themselves from this. HE MAY VERY WELL NOT WANT IT> If he did audition, he may not have been able to ACT the part though he many LOOK the part. Grow up, the fact these people have started a petition shows how sad their lives have to be to be so consumed in a character and film; but I guess living in a fantasy says a lot about the signatures.

  35. JC says:

A quick show of hands, how many of these “fans” saw the auditions for these two roles? And . . . that’s no hands in the air. Get a life losers.

  36. MichaelZ says:

This is like the contest for Miss Golden Globes… a complete JOKE! Worst casting choices I’ve ever seen. Fitting for the worst book I’ve ever read. Like watching porn with the sex scenes completely cut out. Worst line ever repeated again-and-again: “He touched me THERE.” BARF!!!!!

  37. Evie Hammond says:

Couldn’t dislike this cast more — never could have imagined someone more wrong for Anastasia. It’s the typical Hollywood meat grinder in motion. The minute I heard the casting for Christian, I decided I will not be buying a ticket.

  38. LM says:

I agree with the studio’s choice. Although I have not read the book nor intend on reading it, as they mentioned above “there’s a lot that goes into casting”. Waiting until when the movie is in the theater, fans can decide at that time whether it meets their expectations. If it doesn’t, maybe another studio will remake it with a new cast, just like it is mentioned with Batman. Bottom line is that it is the studio’s money.

    • How can you say you agree with the choices when you admit that you didn’t and won’t read the books????

      • Darth vader says:

Because the choices y’all clearly want suck ass. Are fucking serious?? Shut your god damn mouths and you and me both know that you will still watch and still enjoy it and come out if the movie like damn. They were good choices

  39. Billy Mark says:

One of the WORST, MOST BORING books of all time generates the WORST casting decisions of all time. Well done!

  40. Stephanie says:

No!!! Not Matt Bomer either! Yuck!! HENRY CAVILL IS THE ONLY CHOICE!!!

  41. Mo says:

I agree, piss poor casting here. Yikes!

  42. Sheri says:

I can’t get into Matt Bomer being Christian Grey because he is gay. Knowing that, I just can’t buy him being heterosexual and being into a woman, although I know he is supposed to be acting.
I am okay with both Dakota and Charlie. He cleans up beautifully.
Fans will ruin this movie of they keep on demanding a change. I think they will go see the movie when they see production pictures. It’s better to have two people who aren’t as widely known playing the leads.
Be Calm and give it a chance.

    • Pat says:

Totally agree, I can’t take it seriously seeing a gay man making love to a woman, even though it’s acting I like to think there could be a spark between the lovers.

  43. Marie says:

Let’s just say there’s a reason middle America shouldn’t cast movies. Charlie Hunnam is PERFECT. It’s like no one ever heard of hair dye. And for the record, that petition is specifically about wanting Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel. Probably the only combo that could make a movie about BDSM boring.

    • Shannon says:

I agree – both about the hair dye and about Matt and Alexis. Plus neither one of them was ever even interested in the parts.

    • cheryl says:

Totally agree. Charlie Hunnam will be amazing. People need to shut up and let the casting people do their thing. Long live Jax and SOA.

  44. Mary says:

If all of producers an directors gave us the option to choose characters in there movie I think every movie would be the same

  45. nhsuvyvd says:

Even Lindsay Lohan turned down this turkey. Why do people believe this is sexy? Twelve year old boys can write better soft-core porn.

    • Bob C. says:

Not true! Lindsay Lohan did NOT turn down the role. She made it clear that THIS is the film she wants more than anything after rehab. She supposedly “read the book several times” and she says she “knows the character.” Google it. It’s there.

  46. Elizabeth W. says:

I know Charlie can get this role down pat. He’s what I call a variety actor, meaning he can play the sweet guy next door and the tormented charmer. I know the fan favorites, I was an Ian Somerhalder fan but seeing that he wasn’t really in the running, I don’t mind Charlie playing the illustrious Mr. Grey. So buck up people, I doubt they will recast. You have two options watch it or don’t!

  47. Brett says:

Unless these “fans” have millions of dollars to finance the movie, they need to get over it. I’m sick of “fans” thinking they can dictate every project in Hollywood by starting a petition. Get over it!

    • announcergirl says:

I get what you’re saying, however, the fans are the ones that made this book popular and millions. The same fans are the ones who will make the movie millions. So, if the studios don’t care about that then they can enter their little show in the art category of Sundance or something and not try to cash in on a motion picture on the big screen. Otherwise, listening to the fans is the smart thing to do!

      • Darth vader says:

Who’s cares honestly who the fuck. I wish I was in every movie cutting my friends in half with my light saber but doesn’t look like I get my way does it

  48. DG says:

The real problem with this project is that it exists at all, in book OR movie form. Who cares who gets cast, it will be utter crap regardless.

  49. Tami says:

  50. Absolutely ridiculous , I don’t agree with Matt bomer playing Christian , everyone sees Mr Grey differently so not everyone is going to be happy I don’t agree with who they choose for Ana but you also need to see it like this perhaps Matt , Ian and Henry didn’t want to be in a film where there naked most of the time . You all know your still watch the film whether your happy or not . So stop moaning
