Fabula to produce Navarro’s ‘Homeless’

Toon pic is a spin-off from its TV series

Fabula, producer of Sony Pictures Classics’ Chilean Oscar foreign-language nominee “No” and Berlin competition player “Gloria,” is making its first toon feature, “Homeless,” a spinoff from its Chilean TV series.

Toon will tap coin from the new Participant PanAmerica fund that Participant Media announced Feb. 7.

Unspooling in a modern capital, the social satire turns on three wealthy men who become vagabonds, only to discover that a cartel of tramps is hacking into bank accounts, creating a new class of wealthy homeless.

Ignacio Navarro, who directs the “Homeless” TV series, will helm the movie with his co-screenwriters Santiago O’Ryan and Jorge Campusano. Fabula will produce.

The screenplay is finished and the animation is at character design stage, Fabula producer Juan de Dios Larrain told Variety at Berlin. The animation studio still has to be established, he added.

The target audience is young adults and older. “The humor will be in the line of ‘South Park,’ but the design rougher in look,” Larrain said.

Chile is seeing increasing international success with TV animation. Pre-school toon programming block, “Zumbastico Fantastico,” produced by Zumbastico Estudios, played from November 2011 on Cartoon Network Latin America, and sold well at last week’s Kidscreen Summit in New York.

“Chilean TV animation is building strongly, companies are associating, selling abroad. It’s where Chilean cinema was five years back,” said Constanza Arena, head of CinemaChile promotion org.
