Transplanted Canadian thesp works her way back to Toronto for the right ‘Reasons’

CLAIM TO FAME

Montreal-born Emily Hampshire took an ill-fated ride with Alan Rickman in “Snow Cake” (2006) and co-starred with Robert Pattinson in David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” before teaching Jonas Chernick the ropes — literally — in last year’s “My Awkward Sexual Adventure.” The thesp is particularly well known in Canada, having earned three Genie nominations for her work in TV as well as film. Her next pic, “All the Wrong Reasons,” debuts at the Toronto fest.

NORTHERN BEGINNINGS

A casting director saw her in a play, and put her in her first movie. At that fi lm’s Montreal premiere, she once again found herself making travel plans. “One of the producers was driving to Toronto, and at that time Toronto was where it was at. So I hitched a ride with him and I spent the summer in Toronto, and just didn’t stop working after that.”

MOVIE MENTOR

Hampshire made “Snow Cake” just before she moved to Los Angeles, and co-star Rickman took her under his wing. “He helped me transition to L.A., and introduced me to people and made sure I was set up here. He’s kind of been there for me all through my career.”

TAKING CONTROL

“I want to be in a position where I get to choose what I do and make the movies I want to make, as opposed to sometimes, you have to make the one you get.”

JOB TRAINING

She took a class in pole dancing to prepare for her role as a stripper in “My Awkward Sexual Adventure.” “I was terrible,” she laughs.

L.A. VS. CANADA

The actress has worked in a number of TV shows, including “Earthsea” and, most recently, “Rookie Blue.” “My peers and I in Canada, we get to work a lot more than, I think, my actor friends out here. I think there’s a plus and minus to it. But the plus is definitely that we get to hone our craft and I get to be the lead in movies. Out here, sometimes, they need a name first.”

  1. Hi Emily, I am leaving this comment as I cannot find contact detail details without a Facebook or Twitter account. I refuse to participate in either, autistic of me… I really admired your performance in Snow cake and have embedded your name in my word sculpture as a result. I hope you do not mind? My word sculpture can be found by Googling Reliatec. Thank you so much for your input to the world, you know what I mean… Jarrod
