Ekberg, Verhoeven, Loach to lecture in Berlin

Mitchell, Green, Campion attend Talent Campus

BERLIN

Anita Ekberg, Paul Verhoeven, Ken Loach, John Cameron Mitchell, David Gordon Green and Jane Campion are among a host of industryites that will take part in this year’s Berlinale Talent Campus.

The 11th edition of the educational and film lab program is offering a new hands-on training program in addition to interviews and panel discussions.

Multihyphenate Verhoeven will kick off the Campus program by discussing his experiences in filmmaking, while Ekberg will chat about her career as an actress and notable work with helmers Federico Fellini, Robert Aldrich and Gerd Oswald.

Mitchell (“Shortbus”) joins Israeli writer-director-actress Hagar Ben Asher (“The Slut”) to discuss their use of sex to make incisive critiques about society in a session dubbed “Some Like it Hot — The Power of Sex.”

Green, who is presenting “Prince Avalanche” in competition, joins Hungarian Silver Bear winner Bence Fliegauf (“Just the Wind”) and South Africa’s Oliver Hermanus (“Beauty”) to discuss stories that thrive on strong but unspoken emotions and subtle visual imagery, while fellow directors Fredrik Bond, in Berlin with “The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman,” and Yasemin Samdereli (“Almanya”) talk about directing films that aim for large auds, ranging from comedies to actioners.

Other filmmakers and thesps premiering films at the fest, and taking part in the Campus, include Campion (“Top of the Lake”), Loach (“Spirit of ’45”), Austrian helmer Ulrich Seidl (“Paradise: Hope”), German actress Nina Hoss (“Gold”) and French producer Hengameh Panahi of Celluloid Dreams.

The event, which runs Feb. 9 to 14, will also dedicate a panel to late documentary filmmaker Chris Marker, who won a Golden Bear in 1961 for “Description of a Struggle.”

As part of this year’s focus on sound design, which includes the Campus’ new Sound Studio hands-on training program, Walter Murch (“Apocalypse Now”) will hold a master class on his work in connecting sound and narrative in film.

In addition, German architect Juergen Mayer H. joins designers James D. Bissell (“300”), Alex McDowell (“Minority Report”) and Habib Zargarpour (“The Bourne Identity”) to discuss building cinematic worlds.
