Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American distribution rights to Joe Swanberg’s “Drinking Buddies” on the heels of its premiere at South by Southwest.
The relationship comedy stars Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick and Ron Livingston. Producers are Dark Arts’ Alicia Van Couvering and Andrea Roa; Burn Later’s Paul M. Bernon and Sam Slater; and Swanberg.
Magnolia plans a release later this year.
The film was exec produced by Mike Witherill, Ashley Bernon, Jessica Klapman, David Kaplan, Anish Savjani, and Wilde.
Story follows characters played by Wilde and Johnson who work together at a craft brewery.
The deal for the film was negotiated by Magnolia’s Dori Begley and Peter van Steemburg, with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers and producers.
Swanberg’s prior films include “Hannah Takes the Stairs,” “Silver Bullets” and “V/H/S.”
Peter Debruge said in his Variety review at SXSW: “With ‘Drinking Buddies,’ director Joe Swanberg proves what many had suspected — or at least hoped — all along: that he has learned something from directing 13 features in eight years, here finally making a romantic comedy that looks like it cost more than the price of a movie ticket to produce.”
