IDA Shutters DocuWeeks for New Screening Series

Key element of doc world revamped

In an effort to address the changing rules of the Oscars and evolving needs of filmmakers, the Intl. Documentary Assn. is replacing its 16-year-old DocuWeeks showcase with the IDA Documentary Screening Series.

The IDA Documentary Screening Series will consist of invitation-only screenings of 15 docu features, taking place between September and January. The org said the switch is the result of internal discussions that, among other things, revealed the desire for “a program that extends throughout the awards season and works in harmony with industry guilds and organizations to raise awareness for documentary films overall.”

Each screening, targeted at IDA members as well as members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and industry guilds, will include a Q&A with the filmmakers that later will be posted online.

“As the industry evolves, so will we,” IDA exec director Michael Lumpkin said. “With this new screening series, along with programs like our annual IDA Documentary Awards and DocuDay, we will continue to celebrate and champion the art of documentary filmmaking worldwide.”

From 1997-2012, 30 films from DocuWeeks were nominated for Oscars, with seven winning, including 2007’s “Taxi to the Dark Side.”
