First additions to kudos since 2005

The Directors Guild Awards has added two new honors for 2014, while also clarifying that digitally distributed series are eligible for major existing honors.

Newly included in the DGAs will be a program award for variety, talk, news or sports (including such potential shows as “Saturday Night Live,” “American Idol,” “Ellen,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” or national evening news and regularly scheduled sports broadcasts), and an award for specials in the same group (such as the Oscars, Super Bowl or a Barbara Walters special).

These awards replace the musical-variety award, which encompassed both series and specials. The additions are the first to the DGA Awards since the introduction of the reality category in 2005.

Streaming series such as “House of Cards” are now eligible to compete with conventional TV programs in those two categories plus drama series, comedy series, movies-minis, documentary, reality and children’s programming. The DGA award for commercials already has included Internet-based ads since 2007.

Last week, the Writers Guild Awards made a similar pronouncement.

The DGA also said that daytime serials have been moved into the drama series category, which will no longer distinguish between when shows air on a given day.

The DGA Awards will be held Jan. 25. Voting for the DGA feature film nominations will take place from Dec. 3 through Jan. 6, with nominations announced Jan. 7. For TV and commercials, nominations voting will take place Dec. 16-Jan. 7, with nominations announced Jan. 9. Documentary nominations will be announced Jan. 13.

All voting will remain online for the DGA, with feature film screeners still permitted for distribution.
