Demme’s “Fear of Falling” To World Preem At Rome Fest

"Fear" is first title unveiled by Rome, which is headed by Marco Mueller

The Rome Film Festival has secured the world preem of Jonathan Demme’s “Fear of Falling” which reunites Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, following their cult collaborations on Louis Malle’s “My Dinner with André” and “Vanya on 42nd Street.”

The story of a famous architect increasingly caught up in his own fantasies, “Fear of Falling” is based on Gregory and Shawn’s contempo adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s play “The Master Builder” and sees the multi-hyphenates also star.

Pic is being described in fest press notes as the culmination of a 14 year labour of love for Shawn and Gregory, whose artistic collaboration spans four decades.

Fear” marks the first time Shawn and Gregory work with Demme whom they praise in the fest notes as a “a worthy successor of Malle” in a pic that, similarly their previous works, addresses the relationship between film and theatre with a strong personal vision and a subtle humour.

Demme’s new film will world preem in Rome’s CinemaXXI section, dedicated to new trends in global cinema. Demme will also be holding a master call at the fest.

Shawn is also expected to make the trek to the Eternal City.

“Fear” is the first title being unveiled by Rome, now at its second edition headed by former Venice topper Marco Mueller.

Pic is produced by Demme’s frequent producing partner, Rocco Caruso. It reunites Demme with his longtime collaborator Declan Quinn – the cinematographer of “Vanya on 42nd Street” – who served as Director of Photography most recently with Demme on “Rachel Getting Married.”

Rome’s eighth edition will run November 8-17.
