David O. Russell Abscam Film Bows

Sony will expand the film nationwide Christmas Day

Sony is beefing up its year-end holiday schedule dating David O. Russell’s newest project about the 1970s Abscam operation for a limited Dec. 13 release, with plans to go wide Christmas Day.

The untitled project, which stars Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Louis C.K., bows less than a week before Sony launches George Clooney’s “Monuments Men” on Dec. 18. Both arguably will receive sizable awards campaigns.

The platform release is typical for most adult-driven fare released at around Christmas. Sony used a similar strategy for “Zero Dark Thirty,” though that film didn’t expand wide until after the New Year.

The Russell film follows an FBI sting operation that led to the conviction of several U.S. Congressmen. Pic goes up against other Christmas Day wide releases including Universal’s “47 Ronin,” Paramount’s “Jack Ryan” and Fox’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.”
