Cyrte, China Film Board John Woo’s ‘Flying Tigers’

Shooting set for early next year

Cyrte Investments and China Film Co. have come on board with John Woo (pictured above) and Terence Chang for their “Flying Tigers” World War II project to be released in two versions — a two-part feature for China and a six-hour miniseries for other markets.

Project, which Woo and Chang have been developing for several years, revolves around a group of U.S. pilots who joined the Chinese Air Force to help ward off Japanese attacks before the United States entered World War II. The “Flying Tigers” moniker was due to the shark’s teeth painted on their fighter planes.

Chang and Woo will produce under their Lion Rock banner. Netherlands-based Cyrte will also work with Exclusive Media, which is part of Cyrte’s portfolio, on the  “Flying Tigers” project.

“‘Flying Tigers’ is a project that I have always wanted to do, because this is a story that expresses the courage, resourcefulness, friendship, and spirit of both the Chinese and American people and pilots,” Wood said in a statement. “It promotes friendship between the two nations.”

Woo is expected to begin shooting “Flying Tigers” in early 2014.

The involvement of Cyrte and China Lion was announced during ceremonies at the Beijing Film Festival attended by Cyrte CEO Frank Botman and China Film chairman Han Sanping.

Lion Rock’s feature credits  include “Red Cliff,” “Paycheck,” “Bulletproof Monk” and “Reign of Assassins.”
