With a release date a little more than a year away, Universal and Steven Spielberg acted fast to find their “Jurassic Park 4” director, tapping “Safety Not Guaranteed” helmer Colin Trevorrow to spearhead the next installment.

Universal had set a June 13, 2014 bow, and finding a helmer quickly was essential so that the pic wouldn’t be delayed. Frank Marshall is producing with Spielberg exec producing.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver penned the script but no plot details have been revealed.

Though it’s been more than 10 years since the last “Jurassic Park” pic, Spielberg has said for some time that he wants to continue the story. He reiterated his commitment to its development at the 2011 Comic-Con while promoting “The Adventures of Tintin.”

The search for the director has been going on for the last couple of months, with insiders saying it was nearly impossible to find out who was up for the job.

Spielberg recently announced that his sci-fi pic “Robopocalypse” was being postponed indefinitely. And while it was always thought that he would only have a producing role in the “Jurassic” sequel, the extra free time has given him the opportunity to work with Marshall to decide on a helmer who’s the best fit.

Universal sees this property as still having a strong fan base, with the studio already re-releasing “Jurassic Park” in 3D next month. The past three films have grossed more than $1.9 billion worldwide.

Universal has had a solid track record revamping franchises like “The Fast and Furious” and “Bourne” series.

Trevorrow is repped by Verve, 3 Arts and Attorney Lev Ginsburg.
