Dabis stars in pic; directs from own script

Cohen Media Group has acquired U.S. distribution for Cherien Dabis’ comedy-drama “May in the Summer.”

The film is produced by Christopher Tricarico, Alix Madigan-Yorkin and Dabis, and was a co-production of Anonymous Content, Displaced Films, Doha Film Institute, White Water Films and Durga Entertainment.

Cohen Media Group will release “Summer” in major markets.

Dabis, who won the Fipresci Prize for “Amreeka” in 2009 at Cannes, stars in and directs “Summer” from her own script in her acting debut. She plays a sophisticated New Yorker who returns to her childhood home of Amman, Jordan for her wedding, where familial and cultural conflicts lead her to question the big step she is about to take.

The film also stars Hiam Abbas, Bill Pullman, Alia Shawkat, Nadine Malouf, Ritu Singh Pande and Alexander Siddig.

The project received development support from the Time Warner Storytelling Grant and a production grant from the Jordan Film Fund.

The distribution agreement was negotiated by CMG’s Gary Rubin and Adeline Fontan Tessaur of Elle Driver.
