The original “Hellraiser” is getting a remake, and it will come from the mind of the original writer and director, Clive Barker.

The prolific English writer announced via Facebook that he has pitched an idea to Dimension Pictures for a remake of the first “Hellraiser” film and the studio has asked him to go forward with writing the script.

He explained, “What can I tell you about it? Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first HELLRAISER.”

Barker also said he plans to bring back the original actor who played Pinhead, Doug Bradley.

The first “Hellraiser” was released in 1987 and grossed $14.5 million domestically. It spawned three sequel, none of which outperformed the original.

  1. I had become a fan of Clive Barker’s books long before the original “Hellraiser” came out, so when I heard that film adaptation of “Hellraiser” was going to be made, and that Barker himself was going to direct, I thought to myself, “If Clive Barker has as ghastly a flair for directing as he does for writing, this could be an AMAZING movie.”

Well as it turns out, Barker is not much of a director, and while the movie had its flashes of brilliance, overall it was a disappointment. “Hellraiser 2” was a far, FAR better film, with a bigger budget, better special effects, and some seriously f*cked up set pieces, not the least of which was Dr. Charnard’s makeover in a strange Cenobite machine.

Although Clive Barker’s career has floundered a bit in recnt years, I’m willing to give this new film a chance.

I wouldn’t say his career has floundered at all. His Abarat books might be the most popular things he has ever written.

Hey, Mr. Barker, how about writing the final “book of the art” novel before working on a movie you already made. Thanks.
Signed – every single person who has waited over a decade for this trilogy to finish.

Bryan., no, dumdum, the first two Hellraisers are justifiably considered horror masterpieces

  4. Bryan Dowling says:

If he realises what a piece of crap his original film was and wants to improve and give Pinhead a better film than the thrash that was Hellraiser 1987 then work away.

Three sequels? There’s eight of them.
