Cinedigm Takes ‘Short Term 12’ for North, South America

Cinedigm Takes 'Short Term 12' North,

Cretton's drama won grand jury and audience awards at SXSW

Cinedigm has acquired North American and Latin American distribution rights to Destin Daniel Cretton’s “Short Term 12.”

The drama took the grand jury and audience awards at South by Southwest this month.

Cinedigm plans to release the film theatrically in late summer.

Brie Larson stars as social worker who has channeled the demons of her own troubled past into a passion for helping at-risk teens.

It’s Cretton’s second feature following his Sundance  selection “I Am Not a Hipster.” “Short Term 12” also stars Kaitlyn Dever, John Gallagher Jr., Rami Malek and Keith Stanfield.

Traction Media’s Maren Olson and Asher Goldstein produced alongside Joshua Astrachan of Animal Kingdom and independent producer Ron Najor.  Frederick W. Green, Douglas Stone and David Kaplan exec produced and Amanda Johnson-Zetterstrom co-produced.

Animal Kingdom fully financed “Short Term 12.”

Variety’s Peter Debruge gave the film a glowing review at South by Southwest, writing: ” ‘Short Term 12’ is a film about scars, some physical, others emotional, but all examined with a sensitivity and understanding that cuts deep. Set in a group home for damaged adolescents where staff members face many of the same challenges as their young charges, this compelling human drama finds fresh energy in the inspirational-teacher genre, constantly revealing new layers to its characters — none more complex than Brie Larson’s thick-skinned supervisor.”

Cretton is represented by WME, manager Jonathan Hung, and Chad Christopher of SMGSB.
