Cinedigm nabs ‘Fruit Hunters’ doc

Film inspired by 2008 bestseller

Cinedigm has nabbed U.S. distribution rights for Yung Chang’s docu “The Fruit Hunters” in advance of its Berlin bow, the National Board of Canada announced Wednesday.

Cinedigm director of acquisitions Emily Rothschild and NFB head of sales Christina Rogers negotiated the deal.

Inspired by Montreal author Adam Gollner’s 2008 bestseller “The Fruit Hunters: A Story of Nature, Obsession, Commerce and Adventure,” the pic follows such fruit-obsessed folks like thesp Bill Pullman, Hawaii-based tropical fruit activist Ken Love and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden curators Richard Campbell and Noris Ledesma.

“Fruit Hunters” bowed at the Montreal docu fest last November, and had its U.S. bow at Palm Springs last month.

“We look forward to engaging adventurous agriculturists and foodies who will love it and, beyond that, to inviting a broader audience to explore a passionate world they likely never knew existed,” commented Rothschild.

The docu is produced by EyeSteelFilm’s Bob Moore and Mila Aung-Thwin and the NFB’s and Kat Baulu. Executive producers are EyeSteel’s Daniel Cross, the NFB’s Ravida Din and Robin Smith of Canuck distributor KinoSmith.

Cinedigm will release “Fruit Hunters” this spring, followed by release on VOD, digital and DVD.
