Christina Hendricks books role

Thesp to topline Scott's big-screen version of Didion's 'Prayer'

“Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks will topline Campbell Scott’s big-screen version of Joan Didion’s “A Book of Common Prayer.”

Marcia Weiss is producing the indie drama. Variety reported Jan. 24 that Scott had come on to direct.

Novel, published in 1977, centers on Charlotte Douglas, an American woman who arrives in a fictional Central American country on the verge of revolution and inexplicably imagines it is the place where she will be reunited with her fugitive 19-year-old daughter. Story is told through the eyes of an American anthropologist, long married into the ruling family of the country, who tries to decipher the meaning of Charlotte’s journey.

“We are thrilled that Christina has agreed to come on board to play the lead role of Charlotte Douglas,” Scott and Weiss said. “Charlotte is a complex and compelling character and Christina is the perfect actor to play her.”

Script has been adapted by Joyce McKee and Rachel LeMin.

Scott’s directing credits include “Off the Map,” “Final,” and “Company Retreat.” Scott was last seen in “The Amazing Spiderman” as Richard Parker.

Hendricks is repped by KLWGN. Scott is repped by Paradigm.
