In an interview just published by Entertainment Weekly, the “Dark Knight Rises” actor discussed (and quickly nixed) the idea of returning for another Batman feature, as well as Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Justice League” feature.
“We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy,” he said.
Bale and Nolan had repeatedly stated that “The Dark Knight Rises” was their last Batman movie but given the recent success of “Man of Steel,” the rumor mill naturally began to spin online.
“Chris (Nolan) always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘We’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well.”
Bale added that he had no problem giving up the Batman role to another actor.
“It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”
As for the “Justice League” feature, Bale did acknowledge that a movie may be in development but without his involvement.
“I have no information, no knowledge about anything,” he said. “I’ve literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a “Justice League” movie, that’s it.”
While Bale may oppose the idea of another Batman feature, it’s worth noting that Robert Downey Jr. had the same reaction towards Iron Man standalones before signing on for two more “Avengers” films.
