China’s DMG Boards Johnny Depp’s ‘Transcendence’

Deal with Alcon also transcends ‘Point Break’

BEIJING — L.A.- and Beijing-based DMG Entertainment has inked a tie-in with Alcon Entertainment. It will finance, produce, and distribute the 2014 Johnny Depp-starrer “Transcendence,” which is now in production.

The two shingles have also agreed to do the same deal on the remake of “Point Break,” which is in late stage development at Alcon. DMG will distribute both pictures in China, while Warner Brothers will distribute in North America, DMG said in a statement.

“Transcendence” features Depp, Morgan Freeman, Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall and Kate Mara and marks the directorial bow of “Dark Knight” helmer Christopher Nolan’s cinematographer, Wally Pfister.

“We are very excited that these will be the first two films of what will be a long- lasting and very successful partnership with both Alcon,” said DMG topper Dan Mintz.

DMG’s China access has given it a strong run of late, with “Looper” and “Iron Man 3″ both performing well in the world’s second largest movie market.

Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove hailed DMG’s “global insight and imagination.”

“Their track record is unprecedented. To watch DMG’s performance on the US/China collaborations of ‘Looper’ and ‘Iron Man 3’, and then know our movies are following on that kind of success…it’s nothing less than awesome,” they said.

Lensing on “Transcendence” began in June and pic is slated for release in April 2014.
