Reports had Hunnam as front-runner

Despite a recent report that “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam was the front-runner for the role of Christian Grey in Universal and Focus’ “Fifty Shades of Grey,” sources close to Hunnam as well as studio insiders tell Variety no casting decisions have been made on the project.

Twitchfilm reported on Tuesday that Hunnam was the studios’ prime target and, while sources tell Variety he is on a list of possible contenders, the casting process is still ongoing and it may still be a while before a decision is made.

Universal and Focus are on a global search for the titular character, looking in the States, England and Australia, and say they are prepared to take their time finding the right actor for the part. Although the film is set to bow in August, the shoot is not expected to be a long one and there is still time before a decision needs to be made.

Although Hunnam is a rising star, he still doesn’t cost as much as a leading man, so this casting move would make sense for the studios and director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

  1. Angel says:

    Chris Hemsworth!

  2. Allison deez says:

James Scott from days of our lives should be cast as Christian grey he’s perfect -looks and acting skills , he’s been voted day times hunk 5 yrs running , no ones been able to knock him off n rightly so.alison sweeny should play his older teacher lover n Alexis bledel should play Anastasia …

  3. Candz says:

Yes Ian Somerhalder is the perfect guy for Christian Grey…drool

  4. alexandria says:

I think that he would be perfect for this role!

  5. Lori says:

I would have loved to have seen Ian Somerhalder in this role. No one else I’ve seen has that certain something that just jumps out and unequivocally embodies the character like Ian.

    • Monica says:

I didn’t know who he was until I saw your post and as soon as I saw his picture – YES, YES, YES!!!

He’s excactly what I think Christian would look like! Charlie Hunnam – NO, NO, NO!!! I agree with Beth’s comment, he’s more like the antagonist, Jack Hyde.

Don’t get me wrong, Charlie is hot too, but just doesn’t embody the description in the book (unless he shaves his goatee and dyes his hair black!).

And I agree that the casting team needs to take their time with this one; with all the build-up and expectations of women around the world they need to get this right or I doubt there will be interest in the next 2 installments!

    • clydee says:

      he is perfection.
      fantastic actor…
      YES !!!!

  6. Fil says:

He would play the roll of Elliot of course.

  7. meggor38 says:

I don’t believe that movies based on books always match the characters to the way the person is described in the book. Talent has something to do with the choice. That is a poor way to pick an actor to do a role. Those of us who admire Charlie think he would do a great job.

  8. Dee says:

Casting for the parts of Christian Grey and Anna Steel and the Chemistry that they share has to be seen and felt by the viewers who have read the book and understand the characters. Putting the wrong actors in those roles would cost the studios mega bucks in lose of ticket sales, so they need to find the right actors and not worry about the bottom line if done right this movie could top the charts.

  9. Angela says:

    Just, ‘NO’!!

  10. blufly says:

Yuck!! to both. Henry Cavill is the man for this, if anyone has watched the Tudors – Jonathan Rhys Myers would be excellent, but he’s not as good looking, but is tantalizing and truer to the character.

  11. Terri says:

I agree with Beth…Charlie…..NO…..doesn’t even resemble the character protrayed……what are they thinking….as much as I dislike Anderson Cooper…….he looks like more a Christian….

  12. Beth says:

Sorry but Charlie looks more like the villain in the story, Jack Hyde. He is not right for Christian, not even close. What is this film teams problem?

  13. joan waricha says:

he is all wrong—-they need someone more intelligent and mysterious—–llike benedict cumberbatchj

  14. liliana says:

No way! This movie shouldn’t see the light o the day! I hope it’s a false rumor, Charlie is way too good for this garbage!

  15. Leesh says:

No no no, he was so bland in pacific rim that it would be a major mess up if he is cast in the role. I feel that the role could be handled by better actors like Matt bomer or Ryan gosling. Take the time but the casting needs to be perfect.

  16. RS says:

google the movie “Abandon – you’re still a virgin scene” on you tube…ah, I think he should be cast -pronto.

  17. niagirl says:

With the right script, direction and cast it could work out. Charlie would be great. Nine & 1/2 weeks made MR and KB stars. Unfaithful, got DL an oscar nom. Chemistry between the two leads is going to be important.

    • Johnnie says:

What kind of comment is that?
What the right script, direction and cast, ANY movie can work.
So, what you’re saying is, with the wrong script, direction and cast it won’t work?

  18. The book is not the movie. If the project does not go into turnaround (it should, if not ready to go before the cameras), the final result should not show “effort” or this enterprise will falter with fans of the novel and fail with general movie-going audiences.

If the studio is not ready…wait.

  19. meggor38 says:

Good luck, Charlie, Hope you get this one.

  20. Andi says:

This film is going to be a colossal disappointment…

  21. Sarah says:

Do actors who care about their reputations really want this job?

    • nicky97 says:

Did you read the books? Guess not!!! Movie is going to be a hit. Charlie Hunnam will be GREAT in this role with his strong personality and good looks, how can he miss? Love you, Charlie and loved the books.

  22. gina says:

    Ryan Gosling, duh!
