Charlie Hunnam Falls Out of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

Universal cites sked conflicts with thesp's TV work as reason

Charlie Hunnam has fallen out of Universal and Focus’ “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Universal said the thesp left the highly anticipated adaptation of E.L. James’ novels because of conflicts with the shooting sked on his FX series “Sons of Anarchy.”

10 Actors Who Could Replace Charlie Hunnam

Hunnam and Dakota Johnson were set for the lead “Grey” roles of Christian Grey and Anastastia Steel in September.

The stated reason for Hunnam’s departure immediately raised eyebrows. Many “Grey” fans were vocal about their dissatisfaction with the choice of the British thesp best known for his work as a hard-driving biker on FX’s action-drama series.

“The filmmakers of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey,” Universal said in a statement issued Saturday.

Universal and Focus will have to move fast to find a replacement as production was set to start at the end of the month. Focus is also in the midst of a major exec shakeup, with the ouster of longtime leader James Schamus earlier this month and Peter Schlessel coming on board.
Hunnam’s departure may cause a delay in “Grey’s” production sked given how long it took to settle on Hunnam for the key Grey role.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” is slated to open in  August.

  1. Mary says:

I was looking forward to his doing the part. He could have done this sooner. He must have known there would be a problem. He has been doing Anarchy for several years.
I still think Ian Somerhalder would fit the part. Cannot see Gosling for some reason.

There is an actor….Stuart Townsend…doing BETRAYAL now on abc. They would not pick him I am
sure…but……I could see him in the part.

    Oh well….life goes on…lol

  2. Priscilla says:

I think James Scott would be perfect from days of Our lives Very sexy

  3. Very disappointing!!! He would have been perfect…

  4. Bahia Wilson says:

This is a blessing in disguise. Get Ryan Gosling for the part. He Is edgy, sexy and the movie audience know him. He us a bankable movie star!

    • Josh says:

You aren’t going to get a bankable movie star in a role like this. None of them need it for their career. You will end up with a tv actor or up and comer who could use the press from a movie like this. Plus the fans have proven themselves crazy after the initial casting news, so there’s another negative.

  5. Glenn C. says:

Maybe too the die hard fans out there are driving home the message to him that he is not the one. Although he is a good actor they feel it’s not right. Good luck though fans getting Ryan Gosling etc.
