Brody heads to ‘Cannes’

Gallic comedy-drama set during fest

Adrien Brody is in talks to topline “Cannes,” an ensemble dramedy set against the backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival.

French scribe-turned-helmer Christopher Thompson, who made his directing debut with “Bus Palladium” in 2010, will helm the €10 million ($13.4 million) pic. He co-wrote the script with his mother Daniele Thompson. The pair co-wrote most of Daniele’s films, including “Ave-nue Montaigne,” “Change of Plans” and “La Buche,” all of which were commercially successful and traveled in key territories.

“Cannes” is produced by LGM’s Jean-Baptiste Dupont and Cyril Colbeau-Justin plus French TV host Thierry Ardisson’s Ardimages, and co-produced by Orange Studio (formerly known as Studio 37).

Film follows a troubled director who heads to Cannes with his actress wife to present a film at the festival. While under the spotlight, the pair are under pressure to appear like a picture-perfect couple when they’re really suffering a marital crisis.

“It’s a story dealing with love and cruelty,” said Thompson. “Cannes is the ideal backdrop because it can be exhilarating or depressing; it catalyzes rich emotions — we can be hailed as a film master one day and smashed by critics the next day.”

Pic brings together a flurry of secondary characters working in the film world who cross paths at the fest. Pic will also star Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani and French up-and-comers Pierre Niney and Ana Girardot.

Lensing kicks off in Cannes in April and will shoot before, during and after the fest.
