Local pics' share dips to 9.5%
RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s box office take jumped 15.6% to $802.9 million in 2012, the seventh consecutive year of growth, boosted by Hollywood pics.
Local pics took 9.5% of the B.O., down from 11.8% in 2011. However, local distribs performed better than they’ve done since 1990 when state-owned producer and distrib Embrafilme shuttered.
The top distribs were Sony ($124.9 million), Fox ($111.6 million) and Disney ($97.7 million).
Local distrib Paris Filmes grossed $97 million for fourth place, a performance pumped by “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2.”
However, if the figures for Paris’ releases of local comedies in partnership with RioFilme and Downtown are added to its result, the company takes the No.1 spot with $144.4 millions.
Another local distrib, Imagem, also performed well, grossing $70.7 million and placing seventh in the ranking, ahead of Universal.
