Horror film should easily win No. 1 position over Friday the 13th weekend
FilmDistrict’s “Insidious” sequel kicked off the Friday the 13th weekend with an estimated $1.5 million in midnight shows Thursday.
The James Wan-directed horror film, made for only $5 million, is expected to earn a scary-good $32 million to $40 million this weekend for the No. 1 spot.
The last “Insidious” film from Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Prods. debuted to $13 million in 2010 before going on to gross over $54 million at the box office. Not bad for a movie that cost only $1.5 million to make.
Also opening wide this weekend is Relativity Media’s Robert DeNiro-Michelle Pfeiffer dramedy “The Family,” which should gross in the low-teens through Sunday. The film, a co-production from Relativity and EuropaCorp, carries a price tag of $30 million.
