Box Office: Can Friday the 13th Boost ‘Insidious’ Sequel to $40 Million?

Horror sequel launches alongside Relativity's dramedy 'The Family'

FilmDistrict’s “Insidious Chapter 2” should have no trouble possessing the top spot at the domestic box office, taking full advantage of its Friday-the-13th debut.

But therein lies the weekend’s discrepancy: Just how much will the front-loaded day impact the horror film’s total box office?

Three-day projections for “Insidious 2” range widely, starting in the low $20 millions to as high as $40 million. However, most observers are settling for something in the middle, with $30 million-$35 million.

Either way, even the lowest prediction would be a solid start for the low-budget scarer, from Jason Blum’s Blumhouse shingle. The sequel, which reunites helmer James Wan (“The Conjuring”) with stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, cost just $5 million to produce, according to sources.

Moreover, “Insidious 2” should outdo its predecessor, which opened with $13.3 million in 2011. That film, however, went on to gross more than four times its opening, with $54 million domestically. So far, reviews for “Insidious 2” have been mostly negative, with a 25% rating among top critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Also bowing wide this weekend is Relativity Media’s Robert DeNiro-Michelle Pfeiffer dramedy “The Family,” which should gross in the low-teens through Sunday. The film, a co-production from Relativity and EuropaCorp, carries a price tag of $30 million.

Universal’s second-week holdover “Riddick” will likely land in third place, falling north of 60%, for a weekend gross at around $7.5 million. The modestly budgeted sci-fier already has grossed nearly $25 million domestically.

Hispanic families should continue to lift holdover potential for Lionsgate-Pantelion’s “Instructions Not Included,” which just crossed $20 million Stateside. Pic expands this weekend to 932 locations, up from 717.

For “Insidious 2,” which FilmDistrict marketed aggressively to Latinos with customized featurettes and media, the Friday-the-13th berth marks an ideal opening day since horror films tend to be frontloaded.

Here are the last half-decade’s largest three-day openings for horror/thriller pics that debuted on Friday the 13th:

  1. “Friday the 13th” (Feb. 2009): $40.6 million
  2. “The Happening” (June 2008): $30.5 million
  3. “Disturbia” (April 2007): $22.0 million
  4. “Grudge 2” (Oct. 2006): $20.0 million
  5. The Cabin in the Woods (July 2011): $14.7 million

Currently, “Insidious 2” is this year’s top horror film with advanced ticket sales, according to online ticketer Fandango. Pic is outselling films including “Mama,” “The Purge,” “Evil Dead” and “The Conjuring,” all of which overperformed tracking.

At the specialty box office, meanwhile, Sony Pictures Classics launches Saudi Arabian pic “Wadjda” on three screens in New York and L.A. The distrib also expands “Austenland” to 274 locations.
