Salman Khan Charged With Homicide in Fatal Hit-and-Run

Salman Khan Faces Trial in Fatal

Bollywood superstar pleads not guilty to 10-year-old charge

Bollywood star Salman Khan was brought up on charges of culpable homicide in a decade-old hit-and-run case in Mumbai, India, on Wednesday.

Khan, whose 2012 film “Dabangg 2” was a box office success, pleaded not guilty to charges of fatally running over five homeless men in Mumbai, killing one and injuring four others. For years he successfully wended off charges of culpable homicide and fought lesser charges. At one point he had even said that his security guard, a police officer, had been behind the wheel during the latenight incident Sept. 28, 2002.

However, after several of his appeals for a lower charge were denied Khan was brought before a judge in Bandra Magisterial Court to face the charges. Trial starts Aug. 10 and if found guilty he could get a 10-year sentence.

In recent months the Indian judiciary has cracked down on another Bollywood star on years-old charges. Sanjay Dutt, star of such hits as “Munnabhai MBBS,” was recently imprisoned on weapons charges connected with 1993’s fatal bomb blasts in Mumbai.

On Wednesday the judge excused Khan from further court appearances in his court case for now. The busy Khan has “Mental,” directed by his brother Sohail, as well as a seventh season of “Bigg Boss.”

The 47-year-old Khan’s career started in 1988 with “Biwi ho to aisi,” and he’s had several hits such as “Hum dil de chuke sanam,” “Hum aap ke hain kaun” and “Dabangg.” But he has also been in trouble with the law including being sentenced for poaching in 1998, although he didn’t serve time.
