Beta Takes Alpha Role on ‘Walter’

World sales company Beta Cinema has picked up all distribution rights outside the U.S. and Canada to U.S. indie comedy “Walter,” which stars Virginia Madsen, William H. Macy, Neve Campbell and Andrew J. West (pictured).

West (“CSI,” “Bones”) plays the titular Walter, an usher at a movie theater who believes he is the son of God, with the responsibility of deciding whether people spend eternity in heaven or hell. Madsen is his loving but neurotic mother. A shrink, played by Macy, joins forces with a ghost stuck in purgatory, played by Justin Kirk, to help Walter reassess the meaning of life, and win the heart of a co-worker (Leven Rambin). The cast also includes Milo Ventimiglia.

Pic addresses the issue of loss, but it won’t be heavy, promises Thorsten Ritter, exec VP at Beta Cinema. “Our dealing with it in such a light but heartfelt and life-affirming way makes me confident that it will resonate with audiences around the world,” he said.

The film, which is based on a short story by Paul Shoulberg, is helmed by Anna Mastro (“Gossip Girl”), and produced by Mark and Christine Holder for Zero Gravity, Brenden Hill for Purple Bench Films, Ryan Harris, and Benito Mueller for Barry Films. Demarest Films is on board as exec producer.
