Berlinale Generation completes lineup

International selection boasts Costa Rican, Indonesian pics

BERLIN — The Berlin Film Festival’s Generation children and youth section has completed this year’s lineup.

A total of 60 titles, including 25 feature films and 35 shorts, from 36 countries will unspool in the sidebar, which is divided into Generation Kplus for kids and Generation 14plus for teens.

Newly announced 14plus pics include Laura Astorga Carrera’s Costa Rican-Venezuelan co-production “Red Princesses,” about a Sandinista couple who flee with their children from Nicaragua to neighboring Costa Rica, and Reha Erdem’s Turkish drama “Jin,” about a young fighter trying to survive the decades-long war between guerillas and the army in the Kurdish regions of Turkey.

Kongdej Jaturanrasmee’s Thai pic “Tang Wong” follows four Bangkok teens who swear an oath to perform a most embarrassing dance, while Pedro Pinho’s Portuguese drama “The End of the World” likewise focuses on a group of teenagers in Lisbon.

“Structures are crumbling, be it in the institution of the family or an entire nation, yet the longing for community is still strong and this motivates young people to examine themselves and their surroundings,” said Generation director Maryanne Redpath in describing the themes of this year’s selection.

Selected for Kplus are Alfredo Sordeguit’s Colombian-Uruguayan animated work “Anina”; Yang Jin’s Chinese offering “Don’t Expect Praise,” about two very different but inseparable friends on holiday in the country; and Stephan Apelgren’s “Eskil and Trinidad,” about a boy living with his father in Sweden who longs for his mother in Denmark.

From Colombia, Priscila Padilla Farfan’s “The Eternal Night of Twelve Moons” focuses on a young girl from the indigenous Wayuu community, while Eva Pervolovici’s French-Russian “Marussia” follows a homeless little girl and her mother struggling to survive.

In Eugene Panji’s Indonesian pic “Stepping on the Flying Grass,” a little boy dreams of eating at a fine Padang restaurant.

The Berlinale runs Feb. 7-17.
