Mini-series Stars Jon Hamm, Daniel Radcliffe
The distributor has secured six sales of the U.K. miniseries at the annual BBC Showcase sales mart in Liverpool, northern England.
The wry dramedy based on author Mikhail Bulgakov’s memoirs was bought by Germany (RTL Passion), Russia (RenTV), Spain (Wuaki.tv), Israel (Yes), Turkey (Dogus Yayin) and across Latin America (HBO).
Kenton Allen, joint CEO of show producer Big Talk, indicated a U.S. sale is in the pipeline.
He said: “On paper, a miniseries based on a classic of Russian literature doesn’t sound like something that is going to take the international community by storm.
“But our adaptation is anything but dry and dusty. Jon and Daniel brought huge passion and commitment to ‘A Young Doctor’s Notebook,’ and the production team adapted it with real flair.”
Show was greenlit in the U.K. by pay TV platform BSkyB’s Sky Arts, giving the niche web a rare ratings hit.
Around 700 international buyers are at the Liverpool Conference Center, up on last year’s 640, sampling shows from the BBC’s 50,000-hour catalog.
Showcase generates around £50 million ($76 million) a year for Worldwide, around a sixth of its annual revenue.
Formats are expected to be in demand at the mart, where the slate includes “Beat the Pack,” “Don’t Just Stand There,” “I’m Having Your Baby,” and “How We Made Our Millions.”
Deals announced so far include three sales to Latin America — “Great Britons,” remade as “Great Colombians” for History Channel Latin America, “The Week the Women Went” rebooted for Brazil’s GNT by Conspiracao Films, and the sixth season of “What Not to Wear” for SBT Brazil.
