Athena Film Festival unveils lineup

Fest highlighting women's leadership slots 'Beasts,' 'Women'

“Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Women Aren’t Funny,” “Middle of Nowhere” and “Granny’s Got Game” accent the Athena Film Festival’s narrative, docu and short film lineup. Fest runs Feb. 7-10 at Barnard College in New York City.

Three-year-old fest boasts an array of films that depict women’s leadership in real life and in the fictional world. The event also features conversations with directors and actors and workshops for filmmakers.

“The variety of films and filmmakers at the festival this year exemplifies the increasing presence of female leaders in the industry,” said fest co-founder Kathryn Kolbert.

Additional titles this year include Margarethe von Trotta’s “Hannah Arendt,” the Elle Fanning-Alice Englert starrer “Ginger and Rosa,” Andrea Meyerson’s doc “I Stand Corrected” and shorts including Angela Wong’s “Prizefighter” and Mako Kamitsuna’s “She, Who Excels in Solitude.”

Fest will also fete Gale Anne Hurd, producer of “The Walking Dead,” with this year’s Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award. Additional awardees include Ava DuVernay, helmer of “Middle of Nowhere” and founder of the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement; Molly Haskell, film critic and author of “From Reverence to Rape: The Treatment of Women in the Movies”; Rose Kuo, exec director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center; and Pat Mitchell, prexy-CEO of the Paley Center for Media.
