Art Directors Guild noms announced

'Karenina,' 'Argo,' 'Django,' 'Lincoln,' 'Les Mis' score prod'n design nods

“Anna Karenina,” “Argo,” “Django Unchained,” “Lincoln” and “Les Miserables” have scored nominations for production design in a period film from the Art Directors Guild.

The guild announced the nominations Wednesday night as part of 15 feature nods in three categories for its Excellence in Production Design Awards.

“Cloud Atlas,” “Life of Pi,” “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “Prometheus” and “The Dark Knight Rises” were selected in fantasy category. The guild tapped “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Flight,” “The Impossible,” “Skyfall” and “Zero Dark Thirty” for the contemporary film category.

Notable absences in the noms included “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “The Master,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “Rust and Bone” and “Silver Linings Playbook.”

Last year’s Oscar for art direction went to Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo for “Hugo.” Ferretti also won the period trophy from the Art Directors Guild.

The guild winners will be announced Feb. 2 at ceremonies at the Beverly Hilton.

In TV, the noms for one-hour single camera series went to “Boardwalk Empire,” “Downton Abbey,” “Game of Thrones,” “Homeland” and “Newsroom.”

Nominations in TV miniseries/movie went to “American Horror Story: Asylum,” “Game Change,” “Hatfields and McCoys,” “Hemingway and Gelhorn” and “Mockingbird Lane.” Half-hour single camera nods were received by “Community,” “Girls,” “Modern Family,” “Parks & Recreation” and “The New Normal.”

Noms for a multi-camera, variety or unscripted series went to “2 Broke Girls,” “Democratic National Convention,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Saturday Night Live” and “The Voice.”

Awards, music and game show nominations were given to “84th Annual Academy Awards,” “Grammy Nomination Concert Live,” “Super Bowl XLVI,” “The 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards” and “The American Music Awards.”

Previously announced awards will go to Herman Zimmerman for lifetime achievement and to Preston Ames, Richard MacDonald and Edward S. Stephenson for the guild’s hall of fame. The production designers for the James Bond franchise — Ken Adam, Allan Cameron, Dennis Gassner and Peter Lamont — will receive an award for outstanding contribution to cinematic imagery.
