AKA, Bow Street take cuffs off cop doc

Benaroya tubthumps slate at Berlin

The newly minted AKA/Bow Street Films has completed a yet-to-be titled documentary about former New York City detective Michael Borrelli, jailed for murder in the 1970s and found innocent after four years in jail.

Producers are selling the doc at the European Film Market in Berlin and will take it to the Cannes Film Market in May.

Bow Street Films’ Joe Jenckes and David Dickson produce alongside director-producer Sheldon Wilson and producer-composer Steven London. Michael Benaroya is exec producing via his AKA banner.

Borrelli was accused of being a top player in organized crime and, along with his police partner Robert Davis, was sentenced to life in prison for murder. After Borrelli was freed, he was reinstated as a law enforcement officer and spent the next 17 years fighting for his partner’s release.

Benaroya told Variety that the Borrelli doc could be developed into a feature.

AKA and Bow Street merged in November to make star-driven films for under $3 million. The company bowed with “The Rambler,” starring Dermot Mulroney and Lindsay Pulsipher, followed by ensemble drama “Parts Per Billion,” starring Frank Langella, Gena Rowlands, Rosario Dawson and Josh Hartnett for $1.5 million. XYZ is selling “Parts Per Billion” at Berlin.
