Box Office: ‘After Earth’ Plummets to Mid-$20 Million Weekend, ‘Now You See Me’ Close Behind

After Earth

UPDATE: M. Night Shyamalan and Sony’s “After Earth” is cratering at the domestic box office, with an estimated $10 million Friday and paltry $25 million-plus weekend, according to early estimates.

The $130 million film was expected to launch in the $35 million-$40 million range but those figures are long gone.

Summit/Lionsgate’s “Now You See Me” is trailing close behind with north of $20 million for the weekend, an impressive and somewhat surprising haul for the Jesse Eisenberg caper.

Universal’s “Fast & Furious 6,” meanwhile, will easily take the No. 1 position with an estimated $40 million in its second week of release.

In a surprising development, Summit’s  “Now You See Me” earned $1.5 million Thursday night at the U.S. box office, beating director M. Night Shyamalan and Sony’s $1 million launch for “After Earth.”

“Now You See Me,” which cost nearly $75 million compared to “After Earth’s” estimated $130 million budget, opened at 7 p.m. Thursday night, while the Will Smith-Jaden Smith actioner bowed at 9 p.m.

Still, the numbers are a troubling sign for Sony and Shyamalan, who has been all but M.I.A. in the studio’s marketing campaign.

Starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith, “After Earth” is still expected to pull ahead of “Now You See Me” with a $35 million-plus opening.

“Now You See Me,” directed by Louis Leterrier, is on track for a $20 million debut.

Last weekend’s B.O. champ, “Fast and Furious 6,” will likely stay at No. 1 in its second weekend with an estimated $50 million over three days. Previous “Fast” movies have dropped sharply in their second weekends, but the strong opening for the sixth edition shows that the drop may be less than other editions.

  1. Yesterday, while I was at work, my sister stole my iphone and tested to see if it can
survive a 30 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation.
My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this
is completely off topic but I had to share it with someone!

  2. RL says:

Now You See Me was well worth the money.

  3. David says:

I will leave the issue of race and Jaden’s future to the rest of you. For me it was just an AWFUL movie and i’d like my 12 bucks back.

  4. Freedom Fighter says:

This whole stinking project was all Will Smith trying to prop up his son as a Hollywood superstar. Will and Jaden gets all the credit if the movie was a success, but M. Night gets the blame if it bombs. Racism anyone?

  5. Alfonso says:

Atfer Earth is just After Birth, slithered from its mother’s filth. They should’ve put it in a jar on a mantlepiece.

  6. Kenmandu says:

Will Smith has made every effort to make himself and his family unlikable to fans–you, know the little people — you know, the little people who buy the tickets and the merch– But, when the little people don’t care any more — your career is over.

  7. CoolLoin says:

Please. Give Ruffalo some credit for broadening the demographic. He’s got a lot of fans. And Michael Caine added villanous posh and quality creds.

  8. Ben Dover says:

Really glad to see the movie tank……nepatism is alive and well in Hollywood,Smith pressured the studio into using his goofy non acting son and they are paying the price, this movie will be in redbox by the end of the month.

  9. UGH says:

I’m glad the point is getting across. I don’t see Will Smith’s 12-year old kids starring in a movie with him. And we won’t watch it. The reason why we respect Ben Stiller, is bc his father Jerry, didn’t pimp the hell out of him, as a child.

  10. Mgodley1968 says:

The problem with the Smith children is that they are over the top coached. Nothing they do or say in interviews is honest or sincere. They come off as pre packaged entertainment. They remind me of the little girl beauty pagents contestants….all lip gloss and sequins. Also, Jaden is the son of multi millionaire parents raised with the best of everything in LA and he does this fake Ghetto Philly Street bullshit act that nobody is buying.

  11. mark says:

I hear Jaden is starring in the GOONIES reboot! Can’t wait.

  12. David says:

Dear Will: please stop shoving your kids down our throats, it’s bad for them and bad for us.

    The Entire World

  13. Mgodley1968 says:

After Earth will tank when all is said and done. There is a great hostility for Jaden Smith and the public is tiring of Will Smith. There is an odd sense of entitlement from that family and a feeling the children are being shoved down the public’s throats.

    • therealeverton says:

How? You either want to see a film they’re in it you dont. They can’t force anything on you. Save us did Keither Sutherland, Emilio Estevez and Charlie sheen, or Michael Douglas have this much bile thrown at them?

Failure of this film is M Knight and no other. Tired of Will Smith, $600m is a good result for your previous film when the world is tired of you. Given that Jaden hasn’t been in a film since 2010 (a global hit by the way) I think people seem to like having him ” Shoved Down their throats” too.

The choice of director killed thus film before a frame was shot; but at a ‘relatively’ low $130m shooting budget it has a chance of box office success if the international gross is over $200m, which is by no means out if the question for this pairing. (Given that his last few ‘big’ films have grossed significantly more that that internstionsly; several more have either grossed more than $200m, or would have at today’s ticket prices) even Shysmalanight not be able to break Will Smith’s track record. But he may just be that bad!)

    • J Harper says:

I agree with you. I have an issue with Will Smith basically pimping out his children for entertainment.

      • Freedom Fighter says:

Funny how Fast and Furious 6 has a diverse cast featuring whites, Latinos, blacks, Asians, Middle Easterners, etc.. in major roles and go on to make big bucks.

After Earth has a very non-diverse cast with only blacks in major roles and whites in insignificant roles. After Earth is epic bomb of the year.. hmmmmm..
