Academy Picks Film Scholars

AMPAS plans talk on 'Foreign Film Renaissance' book on Monday

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced Christopher Beach and Thomas Schatz as its 2012 film scholars.
The Acad’s program stimulates new works of film scholarship about aesthetic, cultural, educational, historical, theoretical or scientific aspects of theatrical motion pics. Beach, an independent scholar based in Vermont, will explore the collaborative process between helmers and cinematographers, and Schatz, the Mary Gibbs Jones Centennial Chair of the Dept. of Radio-Television-Film at the U. of Texas at Austin, will examine Hollywood during the age of mergers and acquisitions.
Acad’s Educational Grants Committee, which selected Beach and Schatz based on their manuscript proposals, will present the first half of two $25,000 grants at a private luncheon on March 18.
Additionally, Tino Balio, an inaugural film scholar from 2000, will present highlights from his book “The Foreign Film Renaissance on American Screens 1946-1973” at a public event at 7:30 p.m. on March 18 at the Acad’s Linwood Dunn Theater. Balio, professor emeritus of communication arts at the U. of Wisconsin-Madison, will discuss how Stateside auds and crix responded to the works of international filmmakers such as Francois Truffaut, Federico Fellini and Jean-Luc Godard.
Beach and Schatz join 13 other Acad film scholars working on projects.
