Abe Levitow's children donate animation collection to Acad library

Looney Tunesanimator Abe Levitow’s heirs are making sure that his work will be viewed by generations by donating his collection to the Academy.

The Abe and Charlotte Levitow Collection, featuring the work of the noted Warner Bros., UPA and MGM animator and director, includes not only “Looney Tunes” and “Tom ’n’ Jerry,” but also large animated features, such as “Gay Purr-ee” for UPA and “The Phantom Tollbooth” for MGM.

The gift, from Levitow’s children Roberta, Judy and Jon, announced Thursday, features animation cels, backgrounds, storyboards, graphic art materials and related film prints. Along with the more than 500 pieces of original production art, the collection contains scripts and sound recordings.

Levitow’s “Gay Purr-ee” was voiced by Judy Garland and Robert Goulet with songs by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. He also made animated tuner “Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol.”

The collection will be in both the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library, which already contains a sizeable 15,000 item collection, and the Academy Film Archive. All of the production materials may be accessed by the public at the library.
