Academy creates costume designers branch

Org will add governors to board

AMPAS has voted to create a separate branch for costume designers, separating the group from the designers branch.

Academy Governor Jeffrey Kurland will transfer to the newly created branch and eventually be joined by two additional governors. The designers branch will retain production designers, art directors and set decorators.

Costume designers have waited a long time for recognition with branch status,” Kurland said. “As a governor representing these designers, I’m thrilled and grateful for the Academy’s support.”

In addition, representation of the 7-year-old makeup artists and hairstylists branch on the board has been increased from one governor to three. Two new governors will be elected later this year to join current governor Leonard Engelman.

“I’m looking forward to sharing the task of representing the Academy’s makeup artists and hairstylists with two of my colleagues,” Engelman said. “New governors will bring new ideas, which will help to keep the Academy’s leadership strong and sharp.”

The changes, determined at Wednesday’s Acad board meeting, will bring the total number on the AMPAS Board of Governors to 48.

“Movies are a visual medium and costume designers, makeup artists, and hairstylists help to create images that tell stories,” Academy prexy Hawk Koch said. “This recognition is richly deserved.”
