2014 award season schedule, Hollywood adjusts

With the Super Bowl and Olympics bogarting February, kudocasts are skating in opposite directions

The 2014 Winter Olympics may be on the far side of the world from Hollywood, but there’s no doubt how much the global sporting extravaganza is affecting next year’s awards season.

(From the pages of the April 9 issue of Variety.)

Because the Olympics in Sochi, Russia, bridge three Sundays in February and follow the Feb. 2 Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey, the entertainment community’s kudofests have parted like the Red Sea, splitting into either January or March to avoid being tackled or snowed under.

Among the major awards shows that have scheduled their 2014 ceremony dates, only Britain’s BAFTA Awards and the film academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards have ventured into the territory occupied by the Olympics.

That way, for the most part, fans of sport and cinema don’t have to choose between biathlon and bling.
