HBO Documentary Films nabs ‘Riot’ rights

Lerner, Pozdorovkin docu preemed at Sundance

HBO Documentary Films has acquired U.S. television rights to Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin’s documentary “Pussy Riot — A Punk Prayer,” which premiered Friday night at Sundance.

Pic tells the true story of the three young women who comprise the feminist art collective Pussy Riot, which performed a 40-second “punk prayer” inside of Russia’s main cathedral, drawing the ire of authorities. They were arrested on charges of religious hatred and their trial made international headlines.

Lerner and Pozdorovkin, who both directed and produced “Pussy Riot,” said in a statement that they “are thrilled to be working with HBO on bringing this important story to the world.”

Documentary was exec produced by Martin Herring and Havana Marking for Roast Beef Prods., Maxyne Franklin for Britdoc Bertha Fund, Nick Fraser and Kate Townsend for BBC Storyville and Nick Quested and Christina Willoughby for Goldcrest Films International, which is handling international sales.

Cinetic Media negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
