Film Movement finds ‘Name’

Takes North America for love story about Polish priest that screened at Berlin

Film Movement has acquired North American rights to Malgoska Szumowska’s love story “In the Name of,” which is screening in competition at Berlin.

Name” will have a New York theatrical opening in the third quarter with a limited national rollout to follow, as well as a day-and-date VOD premiere.

The movie focuses on a homosexual priest in rural Poland whose journey of self-discovery challenges the foundation of his Catholic faith.

Alissa Simon said in her review for Variety: “Treating loaded subject matter — homosexuality, priests who break their vows — in a way that feels far past its sell-by date in the West (after all, it’s been nearly 20 years since Antonia Bird’s ‘Priest’), the pic is unlikely to replicate the offshore sales of the helmer’s international arthouse pickup ‘Elles’ but should travel extensively on the Polish fest circuit.”

The acquisition was negotiated by Film Movement’s Adley Gartenstein and Tanja Meissner at Memento Films Intl.

Memento has sold the film to France, Benelux, the U.K., Germany, Spain, Austria, the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey and Israel.
