The Berlinale’s European Film Market is introducing new panels devoted to the U.S. indie film industry and the international documentary sector.
The EFM is partnering with regional subsidy funder Film und Medienstiftung NRW on its industry talks with international experts from film, TV and media.
This year’s events include “Arthouse on Demand,” which will focus on VOD business models — especially for small-to-medium-sized distributors and producers — discuss the effects of shortened windows and examine promising strategies offered by VOD platforms and opportunities for rights-holders.
“TV Series — The New Cinema?” will look at the emergence of high-quality TV series that are becoming flagship shows for TV stations around the world at a time when the movie industry continues to face challenges in reaching large auds with international films.
Director Jane Campion, who is presenting her first series, “Top of the Lake,” at the Berlinale with co-director Garth Davis, will discuss the potential of TV series and their effects on the development of cinema.
The EFM will also offer a new session, “Shortcuts for First-Timers,” on the first day of the market to help first-time EFM participants.
The Berlinale runs Feb. 7-17.
