Campion to head Cannes shorts juries

Judges to select Cinefondation winners, short film Palme d'Or

PARIS

Cannes Film Festival regular Jane Campion, whose “Bright Star” competed in 2009, will preside over the Cinefondation and Short Film Jury at this year’s fest.

“Jane is a child of Cannes. I know this as it was I who selected her first three short films for the festival, because I liked her style and consistency,” said Gilles Jacob, prexy of Cannes and the Cinefondation. “I am delighted that the love story between Lady Jane and the festival continues today as she takes on the role of president.”

Born in New Zealand, the helmer broke through in 1986 with her Palme d’Or winning short “Peel.” Her feature debut “Sweetie” competed at Cannes. After completing “An Angel at my Table,” which won a flurry of kudos, she scored a second Palme d’Or in 1993 with “The Piano,” which also earned Holly Hunter a best actress award.

Campion’s credits include many films centered on strong and complex female characters in search of their identity, as in Kate Winslet starrer “Holy Smoke,” “Portrait of a Lady” starring Nicole Kidman, and “In the Cut” with Meg Ryan.

Campion’s jury will select three prize winners from among the Cinefondation’s selection of film school shorts, and will also vote for the Palme d’Or for short, which will be presented during the fest’s closing ceremony on May 26.
