Berlinale calls for ‘Crash Reel’

Walker's snowboarding doc to play as a Special showcase

The Berlinale has added “The Crash Reel,” by British filmmaker Lucy Walker, to its official lineup.

Sundance player will screen Feb. 13 in the Berlinale Special showcase.

Walker’s documentary follows 26-year-old champion snowboarder Kevin Pearce, who suffered a traumatic brain injury during training in 2009, and his difficult recovery.

Helmer is a member of the Best First Feature Award jury, which selects debuts from the Competition, Panorama, Forum, Generation and Perspektive Deutsches Kino sections.

Fellow jurors include writer-director Oren Moverman (“The Messenger”) and Kiwi helmer Taika Waititi.

Walker has picked up a couple of prizes in Berlin for her previous docs, including Panorama audience awards for “Blindsight” in 2007 and “Waste Land” in 2010.
