Bankside boards ‘Loving Vincent’

Toon looks at life, death of Van Gogh

Bankside Films has boarded “Loving Vincent,” the first feature length painted animation. The U.K. international sales and production finance company will handle worldwide sales for the U.K.-Poland co-production scripted and helmed by Dorota Kobiela.

Telling the story of the life and controversial death of Vincent Van Gogh through the words of his subjects the film investigates the theories surround his death. It is produced by Poland’s Breakthru Films and the U.K.’s Trademark Films.

Each frame of the film will be an individual oil painting on canvas in Van Gogh’s style, employing cutting edge animation techniques to bring them to life. Thirty painters will hand paint the 56,800 frames that will make up the film over a two-year production for a planned launch in 2015 to mark the 125th anniversary of Van Gogh’s death.

Hugh Welchman, an Academy Award winning for animated short “Peter and the Wolf” in 2008, will produce and co-helm with Kobiela, who is a classically trained painter and animator. Ivan Mactaggart of Trademark Films serves as co-producer. Executive Producers are Sean Bobbitt and David Parfitt.
